Lake Keowee is the crown jewel of Upstate South Carolina waterfront - 18,500 acres of Duke Energy-managed reservoir, 300+ miles of shoreline, and some of the clearest, deepest lake water east of the Mississippi. Lake Keowee is a mountain lake, not a lowland reservoir. Elevations along the shoreline range from 800 to 1,600 feet, water temperatures stay cooler through summer than most Southeastern lakes, and the water clarity regularly exceeds 15 feet.
Duke Energy controls the shoreline under a FERC license, meaning shoreline density is capped, docks are permitted individually, and no marinas or shorefront commercial development can arrive without long approval processes. The practical result: Keowee stays quiet, quieter than nearly every other Southern lake at this level of luxury.
From a buyer’s perspective, Keowee has three tiers: (1) private club communities like The Cliffs and The Reserve at Lake Keowee, (2) established gated communities like Keowee Key and Waterford Pointe, and (3) individual waterfront and lake-access homes outside any community. Each tier has a different price, culture, and dock/water access reality.
